Homewood-Flossmoor looks for repeat as Class 4A state champs, but Rich Township, Mount Carmel and Marist are right behind. 1. Homewood-Flossmoor (33-4) Defending Class 4A state champions have a new look, but the talent is there for another big run. A trio of senior guards leads the way as Jayden Tyler (Wofford) returns and is joined by Thornwood transfer Arden Eaves (Lewis) and Lincoln-Way East transfer Brent Taylor . Look out for talented freshman guard Darrius Hawkins Jr. 2. Rich Township (23-8) Raptors return junior guards Jamson Coulter and Jayden Williams and add a superstar in senior forward Al Brooks Jr. , a transfer from Hansberry and a high-major recruit. His twin brother, Ikee , will add to the guard depth for a team looking to make major noise in March. 3. Mount Carmel (32-6) The 2023 Class 3A runners-up must replace superstar Angelo Ciaravino , who is at Northwestern. But senior guard Grant Best (Air Force) is ready to lead the way, while junior Noah Mister and senior Cameron Thomas add to a talented, deep backcourt. Watch out for freshman guard Marshaun Thornton . 4. Marist (29-5) Football injuries have sidelined senior forward Achilles Anderson for the season and star junior forward Stephen Brown for likely at least a month. When Brown returns, look out. He will join junior guards Adoni Vassilakis and TJ Tate and senior forward Marquis Vance . Junior forward Karson Thomas from Lincoln-Way East and junior guard Rokas Zilys from Vermont Academy are big additions via transfer. 5. St. Laurence (20-12) New coach Roshawn Russell has an intriguing mix of talent, with senior guards Zerrick Johnson and Bradley Stratton coming off big seasons. They’re joined by two returning standouts as senior guard EJ Mosley (Purdue Fort Wayne) and senior forward Jacob Rice have transferred back after spending last season elsewhere. 6. Bloom (19-10) Senior guards Elijah Lovemore and Payton Edwards form a dynamic duo. Senior guard/forward Adam Page , a transfer from Hillcrest, is a big addition. The Blazing Trojans will need newcomers to emerge in the frontcourt. Brother Rice’s Marcos Gonzales (3) drives against Marian Catholic’s Adam Shorter during a Class 3A Thornton Sectional semifinal game in Harvey on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024. (John Smierciak / Daily Southtown) 7. Brother Rice (31-4) Senior guard Marcos Gonzales (Citadel) is ready for even more of a starring role, while senior guard Jack Weigus — a transfer from Hinsdale South — is a prolific outside shooter. Look for senior forward Caden Workman to step up. 8. Lemont (19-12) Guard Gabriel Sularski , who transferred from Benet, is rated as the top junior in Illinois by 247 Sports. He joins an experienced group led by senior forwards Alanas Castillo , Shea Glotzbach and Matas Gaidukevicius . 9. Oak Lawn (22-9) Senior guard Donte Montgomery , who averaged over 20 points last season, is poised to be one of the area’s top players. Junior guard Jack Dempsey is a strong outside shooter, while senior guard Ali Farhan looks to step up. 10. Hillcrest (17-14) With four starters back, don’t expect the Hawks to stay down for long. Senior guard Jovi Ratliff is a scorer and Hillcrest will have the inside advantage against most teams with a pair of 6-foot-7 forwards in senior Jaylen Ingram and junior Max Carmicle . Rich Township’s Jamson Coulter (3) takes a breath before making a free throw against Oak Forest during a nonconference game in Oak Forest on Monday Feb. 5, 2024. (Troy Stolt / Daily Southtown) Charles Barnes , De La Salle, junior, forward. Grant Best, Mount Carmel, senior, guard. Al Brooks Jr., Rich Township, senior, forward. The selection is in keeping with Trump's view that the government's law enforcement and intelligence agencies require a radical transformation and his stated desire for retribution against supposed adversaries. It shows how Trump, still fuming over years of federal investigations that shadowed his first administration and later led to his indictment, is moving to place atop the FBI and Justice Department close allies he believes will protect rather than scrutinize him. Patel “played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability, and the Constitution,” Trump wrote Saturday night in a social media post. The announcement means current FBI director Christopher Wray must either resign or be fired after Trump takes office on Jan. 20. Wray had previously been named by Trump and began the 10-year term — a length meant to insulate the agency from the political influence of changing administrations — in 2017, after Trump fired his predecessor, James Comey. The decision sets up what’s likely to be an explosive confirmation battle in the Senate not long after Trump’s first pick to lead the Justice Department, Matt Gaetz, withdrew his nomination amid intense scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations. Patel is a lesser-known figure, but his nomination was still expected to cause shockwaves. He's embraced Trump’s rhetoric about a “deep state,” called for a “comprehensive housecleaning” of government workers who are disloyal to Trump and has referred to journalists as traitors, promising to try to prosecute some reporters. Trump’s nominees will have allies in what will be a Republican-controlled Senate next year, but his picks are not certain of confirmation. With a slim majority, Republicans can only lose a few defectors in the face of expected unified Democratic opposition — though as vice president, JD Vance would be able to break any tie votes. But the president-elect had also raised the prospect of pushing his selections through without Senate approval using a congressional loophole that allows him to make appointments when the Senate is not in session. Wray fell out of favor with the president and his allies. His removal isn’t unexpected given Trump’s long-running public criticism of him and the FBI, particularly in the aftermath of federal investigations — and an FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate for classified documents two years ago — that resulted in indictments that have evaporated. In his final months in office, Trump unsuccessfully pushed the idea of installing Patel as the deputy director at either the FBI or CIA in an effort to strengthen the president’s control of the intelligence community. William Barr, Trump’s attorney general, wrote in his memoir that he told then-chief of staff Mark Meadows that an appointment to Patel as deputy FBI director would happen “over my dead body.” “Patel had virtually no experience that would qualify him to serve at the highest level of the world’s preeminent law enforcement agency,” Barr wrote. Patel’s past proposals, if carried out, would lead to convulsive change for an agency tasked not only with investigating violations of federal law but also protecting the country from terrorist attacks, foreign espionage and other threats. He's called for dramatically reducing the agency's footprint, a perspective that sets him apart from earlier directors who have sought additional resources for the bureau, and has suggested closing down the bureau's headquarters in Washington and “reopen it the next day as a museum of the deep state” — Trump's pejorative catch-all for the federal bureaucracy. And though the Justice Department in 2021 halted the practice of secretly seizing reporters' phone records during leak investigations, Patel has said he intends to aggressively hunt down government officials who leak information to reporters and change the law to make it easier to sue journalists.
As President-elect Donald Trump shapes his second administration, the country is getting a preview of what the next four years may look like. Early in December Trump filled the last slot of his core cabinet with Brooke Rollin's Secretary of Agriculture nomination. Now he has started to flesh out different departments and name additional leaders for his upcoming term. Among those named are several celebrity figures like TV show host Mehmet Oz , better known as Dr. Oz, who Trump tapped for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator. There's also former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon who was picked to lead the Department of Education and former NFL player Scott Turner named to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Trump has brought some newer faces to America's top politics with investment company executive and art collector John Phelan and media host Sebastian Gorka. The two have been named as Secretary of the Navy and Senior Director for Counterterrorism, respectively. Other notable names include disbarred attorney Charles Kushner as Trump's pick for Ambassador to France. Kushner is Trump's son-in-law's father and was pardoned by Trump in 2020 after pleading guilty in 2003 to having made false statements to the Federal Election Commission, among other subsequent charges. Trump has announced new roles will be coming in his administration, most notably the Department of Government Efficiency that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have been appointed to lead. The group, coined "DOGE," has been tasked with eliminating excess government waste and spending. Trump has also asked technology investor David Sacks to act as his new AI and crypto czar , and has named former acting ICE director Tom Homan as the country's border czar. While nearly 100 positions have been named, many still face what may be a long and arduous Senate confirmation process ahead — one that some may not make it through. Already, some of the picks have caused controversy. Facing opposition over alleged sex trafficking , Trump's initial pick for attorney general, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, withdrew from the nomination. Trump has now called former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi up to fill the role. Questions have also circled around Trump's selection of Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense. The Fox News political commentator has come under scrutiny for a sexual assault allegation , which he has denied, and has been meeting with senators to salvage the nomination.Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6 billion will be spent overall on the festive sales. Before the pandemic the number of Boxing Day shoppers on the streets had been declining year on year. The last uplift recorded by MRI was in 2015. Jenni Matthews, marketing and insights director at MRI Software, told the PA news agency: “We’ve got to bear in mind that (last year) was our first proper Christmas without any (Covid-19) restrictions or limitations. “Figures have come out that things have stabilised, we’re almost back to what we saw pre-pandemic.” There were year-on-year declines in footfall anywhere between 5% and 12% before Covid-19 restrictions, she said. MRI found 12% fewer people were out shopping on Boxing Day in 2019 than in 2018, and there were 3% fewer in 2018 than in 2017, Ms Matthews added. She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. It will also be payday for some as it is the last Friday of the month. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. However, a quarter of respondents aim to spend mostly in store – an 11% rise compared with last year. Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it is encouraging to hear that consumers will be actively participating in the post-Christmas sales. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations.
It’s incredibly difficult to become an NHL head coach, and as many have realized, it’s even harder to remain one. Florida Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice knows this well. Maurice has been an NHL bench boss since November of 1995, when the then-28-year-old was promoted to head coach of the Hartford Whalers when they fired Paul Holmgren. In the time since, he has almost exclusively coached in the NHL, from Hartford and the Carolina Hurricanes (1995-2003) to the Toronto Maples Leafs (2006-2008), back to Carolina (2008-2011) and then the Winnipeg Jets (2014-2021), with brief one-season stops with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies (2005-06) and KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk (2012-13). To say he’s coached through bevy of different styles and phases of the game would be a gross understatement. Even in the NHL, Maurice has seen the game evolve from the clutch-and-grab times when he first began coaching to the attempts to clean it up and increase scoring to the integration of technology and now with a wider and more profound emphasis on player safety, recovery and longevity. Considering he has found success everywhere he’s gone, and on so many differently comprised teams playing in different eras of the game, it’s very fitting that Maurice has been getting his flowers lately. Sure, it probably wouldn’t be happening like this if not for the Stanley Cup success he’s had in recent years, but that’s all part of the journey. As it currently stands, Maurice has coached 1,884 NHL games. Only the legendary Scotty Bowman has coached more: 2,141. If Maurice, who just signed a new contract extension with the Panthers in October, remains behind the bench for another three-plus seasons, he’ll overtake Bowman for most games coached of all time. Maurice is only 57 years old (he turns 58 in January). So how far can he go? 2,500 games coached? How about 3,000?! Taking into account the skills he possesses as both a hockey intellectual and a leader and motivator of men, it may be up to Maurice as to how much longer he coaches in the NHL. Remember, he resigned from his head coaching job in Winnipeg and wasn’t sure what the future would hold. The opportunity to lead the Panthers was such a unique, surprising prospect, it compelled him to jump right back into coaching much sooner than many, including Maurice himself, thought would happen. Currently, things are about as good as they can be. Always known as a great personality who was outgoing with the media, Maurice has taken that persona to the next level since joining the Panthers. His comfort level in South Florida has been as apparent as the success he's found there. Maurice is beloved by his players and coaching staff. He has the full confidence of the front office. The Panthers roster is built to succeed for the foreseeable future, with elite key players locked up to long-term deals. Nobody has a crystal ball that will tell us what the future holds for Maurice, but there is a path that could lead him to NHL coaching immortality. For now, though, Maurice seems quite content taking things as they come and enjoying the ride. Can you blame him? He’s certainly earned his place.Sans J.T. New Jersey 'homelessness czar' at work in Atlantic City, DCA saysPresident-elect Donald Trump said Friday he's in favor of eliminating daylight saving time, calling it "inconvenient" and "very costly" as his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) directors also push for action on the matter. "The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation," Trump posted on Truth Social Friday. While Trump tweeted, "Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me," in 2019, he appears to be changing course now. This comes as his DOGE directors, Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk and Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, have advocated for the time change to be eliminated. "Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time change," Musk posted in response to a poll on X calling for DST to be abolished. "It's inefficient & easy to change," Ramaswamy responded. Any changes would need to be passed by Congress, and legislation on the issue has been considered before in recent years.Sports Buildings Market Size, Latest Trends, Growth Status, Top Major Players And Forecast To 2033 11-25-2024 12:47 AM CET | Advertising, Media Consulting, Marketing Research Press release from: The Business Research Company Sports Buildings Market The Business Research Company recently released a comprehensive report on the Global Sports Buildings Market Size and Trends Analysis with Forecast 2024-2033. However, shoppers eager to get their hands on one of Ninja's latest bestsellers have discovered a way to stack deals and get it for a fraction of the sale price. The Ninja Sip Perfect Travel Mug , which only launched in the UK this month, already has a loyal following among coffee and tea drinkers, with many calling it the 'perfect' insulated cup. The travel mug is available in three stylish colours: black, white and green. It was originally priced at £29.99, but the Boxing Day sale has reduced it by a third to £19.99, a significant saving for anyone wanting to grab this game-changing gadget. Bargain hunters who sign up with TopCashback in time for the Boxing Day sales can get the mug for £3.66 by signing up as a new member, claiming a free £15 signup bonus and cashback, and then clicking through to buy the travel mug . The innovative brand, known for revolutionising UK homes with its tech-savvy gadgets ranging from air fryers to barbecues, has launched a travel mug that's far from ordinary. The Sip Perfect , as it's called, features a lockable lid making it completely leak-proof and is equipped with a unique HeatStore technology that cools drinks down to the ideal sipping temperature in minutes and maintains it for hours. Despite being on the market for just a few weeks, the Sip Perfect boasts an impressive average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars on Ninja's website, with customers lauding its quality and value for money. One satisfied customer labelled it as 'top class', albeit a tad heavy, adding: "I had high expectations of this product as Ninja has a reputation for quality and I'm pleased to say it didn't disappoint. As an outreach worker a good thermal cup is an important part of my "kit" I decided to use this mug for a few days before writing the review to make sure I had put it through its paces. "It looks great and has the quality finish you expect from Ninja . It didn't leak even when in the bottom of my bag. I followed the instructions about preheating the cup and I think my filter coffee was hotter than when I poured it from the pot. It stayed hot for several hours which is brilliant when you are away from access to drink making facilities. I used the cup while working from home and again it kept my drink hot for hours." One satisfied customer raved about the Ninja travel mug , saying: "It's easy to clean, looks great and has a tough external shell. It fitted nicely into the cup holder on my car. The only slightly negative thing I would have to say about this cup is, it's a bit heavy but worth dealing with that as the product is a good one. I'm very impressed." A mum also sang its praises, writing: "This is perfect. As a new mum with a newborn baby I use this to keep my tea, hot chocolate and cappuccino nice and hot. I take this out with me whilst travelling and I love it! The only thing I would suggest is that they could add handles to the cup as well." Another fan highlighted the cup's practicality, saying: "The cup is stylish and keeps drinks hot for quite a number of hours. It washes well both in the dishwasher and by hand and it is easy to separate the different parts. The cup doesn't fit in my car's central cup holders but fits in the door. The cup doesn't leak but I would have preferred a lid that closes automatically once you stop pressing on it because I have forgotten to close it a few times, this is user error." However, one reviewer was less enthusiastic, writing: "Doesnt keep drinks hot for long. I have the flask and that keeps hot drinks hot all day so I thought the travel mug would be the same. I should have just stuck to the flask. Not worth buying." For coffee lovers, finding the perfect travel mug is like discovering the Holy Grail. If this deal - which slashes the price of the Ninja mug to less than many takeaway lattes - doesn't tempt you, there are plenty of other fabulous options also discounted in various winter sales. Coffee aficionados seeking an alternative premium mug can snag 26% off the Contigo Luxe on Amazon right now. Usually priced at £39, it's now down to just £28.99. Also on Amazon, Dualit offers a gorgeous brushed stainless steel option currently reduced to £19.99. Stanley's iconic Aerolight , the hot drink version of the Quencher, comes in slightly cheaper than the celeb-loved cold drink cup. It's available in eleven colours with prices starting from £33 on the Stanley website , but if you're not picky about colour, you can get one from £30 on Amazon , according to Wales Online .
FBI Director Christopher Wray could soon be out of a job. President-elect Donald Trump recently said he will fire Wray after he takes the oath of office next month and replace him with former Justice Department official Kash Patel. During his first presidential term, Trump nominated Wray to be the eighth director of the FBI, calling him “a man of impeccable credentials.” Wray’s 10-year term expires in 2027, which means he would have to either resign or be fired in order to be replaced by Patel, who must still win Senate confirmation. Patel, a Trump loyalist, is a longtime critic of the bureau and has called for shutting down its Washington headquarters and then reopening it as a “museum of the deep state.” Although Wray has been FBI director in Washington for the past seven years, he continues to have deep Atlanta ties. Here are five things you need to know about him. 1. An Atlanta lawyer: Wray, 57, moved to Atlanta in 1993 to join King & Spalding, one of the city’s top law firms. He left King & Spalding in 1997 to become a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office here. He tried a number of high-profile cases. Among them: He helped secure a guilty plea to a mail fraud charge from Pat Jarvis, once a popular Atlanta Braves pitcher who later served as DeKalb County sheriff. He obtained corruption convictions against the city of Atlanta’s former chief investment officer and a politically connected businessman. And he was instrumental in the prosecution of a man convicted of setting church fires, one of which killed a Georgia firefighter. 2. Wray goes to Washington: Wray was recruited to join the U.S. Department of Justice in 2001 by Larry Thompson, a former King & Spalding colleague serving as deputy attorney general. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wray worked closely with Thompson coordinating anti-terrorism and counterespionage efforts. “Chris was very deliberate, made sound decisions, had good judgment and never got panicked,” Thompson said in a 2018 interview. “I relied upon him a great deal.” In 2003, President George W. Bush nominated Wray to be assistant attorney general. He won unanimous Senate approval to head the department’s criminal division and became the youngest person to hold that position since the Kennedy administration. “At the age of 36, Mr. Wray has accomplished more in the legal profession than many of us as attorneys do in a lifetime,” then-Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., said at Wray’s confirmation hearing. While heading the criminal division, Wray oversaw the prosecutions of terrorism cases as well as several high-profile corporate fraud cases, such as the Enron scandal. He returned to King & Spalding in 2005 in Atlanta and worked there as a partner until being tapped to head the FBI. 3. An independent streak: On a number of occasions, Wray pushed back against Trump. When Trump tweeted in December 2017 that the FBI’s reputation was in “tatters” and was the worst in its history, Wray told the House Judiciary Committee a few days later that the bureau he saw had “tens of thousands of brave men and women who are working as hard as they can to keep people they will never know safe from harm.” After being confirmed by the Senate with a 92-5 vote , Wray held an invitation-only, swearing-in ceremony in Washington. Among Wray’s invitees: Sally Yates, his former colleague at the U.S. Attorney’s Office here and whom Trump had fired as acting U.S. attorney general when she refused to defend the administration’s travel ban. 4. Personal: Wray was born and grew up in Manhattan. He attended Phillips Academy, a prestigious preparatory school in Andover, Mass., where he played in rock bands and was a member of the wrestling and rowing teams. He then graduated cum laude from Yale University with a degree in philosophy. During his freshman year, he met fellow student Helen Howell, an Atlantan who graduated from Westminster Schools and whose great-grandfather, Clark Howell, once owned The Atlanta Constitution. They were married at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Buckhead before Wray returned to Yale to get his law degree. They have two children. After Yale law school, Wray clerked for conservative jurist J. Michael Luttig on the federal appeals court in Richmond. Since retiring from the bench, Luttig has strongly criticized Trump and he even endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. 5. Has not seen eye to eye with Trump on several occasions. Just months into his tenure as FBI director, Wray found himself at loggerheads with Trump . In January 2018, Wray went public with a request that the White House block the release of a classified House GOP memo that alleged abuses by the FBI in the Russian election interference investigation. In a statement, the FBI said it had “grave concerns” about the memo’s accuracy. Even so, Trump declassified the memo and it was soon released by House Republicans, enraging Democrats and alarming national security officials. This past Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social that those convicted of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol were “J-6 hostages” and victims of “an abuse and miscarriage of justice.” Patel, Wray’s possible successor, has called the Jan. 6 attack part of a “free speech movement.” But Wray condemned it during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2021, calling the riot “domestic terrorism.” During his Senate confirmation hearing, Wray was asked what would he do if the president asked him to do something that was illegal or unethical. “First, I would try to talk him out of it,” Wray answered. “If that failed, I would resign. There isn’t a person on this planet whose lobbying or influence could convince me to just drop or abandon a properly predicated and meritorious investigation.” ©2024 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The struggling Canucks will try to right the ship by handing the Senators a fifth straight loss Saturday night. Vancouver has lost two straight and four of six following a 7-1-1 stretch, and the team announced this week that star J.T. Miller will take a leave of absence for personal reasons. It's reported he likely won't be available through this road stretch. "We don't know when he'll be back," Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said of Miller, who is second on the team with 16 points. Vancouver has also been without fellow All-Star Brock Boeser (upper-body injury), who has 11 points in 12 games, for the past six contests. But it's been reported Boeser is with the team for this trip and could be set for a return to the ice. Also, fellow star Thatcher Demko is expected to join the Canucks on this Eastern road trip. However, it's uncertain when he'll make his season debut following a knee injury suffered in the 2024 playoffs. "I definitely know that I'll be playing here," said Demko, who set career bests with 35 wins, a 2.45 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage last season. "I can't give you the timeline yet, but I'll definitely be back. (I'm) just enjoying being where I am today and keep making progress." In the meantime, veteran Kevin Lankinen has been solid in Vancouver's net with a 2.71 goals-against average in 13 starts. However, he's allowed four goals apiece in each of his last two. Backup Arturs Silovs, who made 29 saves in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers, is 1-3-1 with a 3.91 GAA in six games (five starts) this season. The Canucks have not suffered three consecutive regulation losses in 2024-25. The club has won four in a row amid a 5-0-1 stretch versus Ottawa. Quinn Hughes has a team-leading 19 points, and 18 in 17 career games against the Senators. Meanwhile, teammate Elias Pettersson, with five goals and four assists in the last eight games, has recorded 10 goals and 10 assists in 13 games versus Ottawa. The Senators have struggled to win consistently. They've allowed 17 goals while mired in an 0-3-1 rut after winning two straight. That said, Ottawa battled Vegas hard during Thursday's 3-2 home loss. "We just need to keep working, keep believing in each other," said the Senators' Drake Batherson, who scored his eighth goal Thursday. "You can't get down. Just come to the rink positive and work hard." Former Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark has allowed 13 goals during his current 0-2-1 starting stretch for the Senators, but made 29 saves against the Golden Knights. Teammate Anton Forsberg has yielded three goals apiece in losing his last two starts. Despite Ottawa's middling performance to begin the season, Tim Stutzle has recorded 17 of his team-leading 23 points at home. He has a goal and five assists spanning his last five games versus Vancouver. --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tabCanada warns claiming asylum is ‘not easy’ with new global ad campaignA female grizzly has explored a vast swath of Yellowstone National Park since being to the region in July while her male counterpart has been more of a homebody. The two bears were trapped by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff in a remote area near the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, just south of Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana. Where the bears roamed was captured by GPS collars the bears are wearing, a map of which was released by FWP on Friday. “We are very pleased to see that both bears have remained in the (Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem), even staying mostly within remote areas of the Recovery Zone,” said Cecily Costello, FWP grizzly bear researcher. “It’s not always easy for a bear to adjust after being moved like this, but they seem to be settling in. We believe both have recently found a den site for the winter.” The grizzlies, both subadults, were moved as a way to genetically connect bear populations in two of the animals' strongholds. The hope is the bears will breed with locals, since the GYE population has been genetically isolated for decades. Grizzly bears in the Lower 48 are currently protected under the Endangered Species Act, although that could change in 2025 as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to rule on petitions to delist the animals in the GYE and the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, which includes Glacier National Park. Chris Servheen, who who for 35 years worked as grizzly bear recovery coordinator for the USFWS, this week urging his old employer to manage the two populations, as well as those in the Cabinet, Selkirk and Bitterroot mountains, as one metapopulation to promote genetic connectivity. Although Servheen said he was pleased to hear the two relocated bears are doing well so far, he said the state of Montana does not "have adequate regulatory mechanisms in place anywhere outside the areas covered by the NCDE and GYE conservation strategies. "A mandatory requirement of the Endangered Species Act for a species to be recovered and delisted is that adequate mortality management mechanisms and habitat management mechanisms be in place to assure that grizzlies remain healthy and recovered after they are removed from ESA protections," Servheen wrote in an email. "There are no habitat regulatory mechanisms on public lands or mortality regulatory mechanisms of any kind in the areas between the ecosystems where grizzlies need to be to connect ecosystems." FWP said, "Both ecosystems have populations of grizzly bears that have surpassed recovery goals." The agency also said translocation could occur again, "depending on how close the two populations eventually grow." “This just jump starts what very likely will also happen naturally,” said Ken McDonald, head of FWP's Wildlife Division. Servheen said natural connectivity between the separate bear populations is unlikely given current FWP management. "FWP currently allows black bear hound hunting in connectivity areas thus risking grizzly mortalities that will rarely be reported," he said. He also noted the agency recently lost a court case that to between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15 can occur in grizzly bear core habitat to avoid trapping bears outside their hibernation period. "However, that ruling is based on listed status for grizzlies," Servheen said. "If grizzlies were delisted, that federal court ruling would be moot anywhere grizzlies were delisted." The two translocated bears were captured and collared within a day of each other southwest of east Glacier in a remote area and driven overnight to the GYE. One was a 3- to 4-year-old female; the other was a 4- to 5-year-old male. “We were looking for the ideal bears,” McDonald said. “It’s actually not that easy to capture two bears that are prime candidates for translocation.” In this case, the ideal bears were subadult, meaning they were older than cubs but not at sexual maturity yet, had no history of conflict and weighed enough to prepare for hibernation, McDonald said. Bears of this age are often in search of their permanent home range, therefore they are more likely to stay in the relocation than more mature individuals, the agency said. FWP worked with partners from the National Park Service and the Wyoming Game & Fish Department on the translocation destinations. The male bear was hauled by boat to the southern end of Yellowstone Lake. The female was taken to a remote location in the Blackrock Creek drainage west of Dubois, Wyoming. Montana has petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to delist bears in the NCDE, and Wyoming, with support from Montana and Idaho, has petitioned to delist grizzly bears in the GYE. In both ecosystems, FWP said states have met the delisting requirements and addressed concerns identified by the public or lined out by federal courts that have overturned previous delisting efforts. These elements include: Reaching population recovery; having conflict prevention and response programs in place ; continuing with research and monitoring ; establishing a regulatory framework for managing grizzly bears once delisted; continuing with education and outreach about grizzly bears; and safeguarding genetic health. In his report, Servheen cited concerns about Montana, Wyoming and Idaho's "regressive state anti-carnivore policies," such as reducing wolf populations, as evidence they cannot be trusted to preserve grizzly bears. His report was supported by several other grizzly bear biologists. According to McDonald, Montana and Wyoming have and will continue to act on their commitment to connectivity, and the agencies will continue to monitor the bears and their genetics to check for population diversity. “That these bears are exploring their new ecosystem and seem to be doing well is an indication that they’ll thrive in their new environment,” McDonald said. “It also reflects the commitment Montana has to grizzly bear conservation.” In a talk this summer, , a U.S. Geological Survey research biologist and leader of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team, called connectivity a "non-issue." He said the greater concern should be about protecting landscapes within both ecosystems from greater development and more recreation.
