A federal government-appointed “gender equality ambassador” has come under fire from the Coalition after departmental documents revealed more than $335,000 taxpayer funds had been spent on airfares and hotels. The ambassador expenses are on top of almost $260,000 spent on travel by the “climate change ambassador” and $145,000 spent on overseas trips by the “ambassador for First Nations Peoples”, the latter role which Liberal leader Peter Dutton has already earmarked for abolition should he be elected. The latest ambassador travel expenses bill has prompted questions by Opposition government waste spokesman James Stevens as to what the existing “100 or so” Australian ambassadors already posted abroad were doing. Previously called the “women and girls ambassador”, the role was created by former Labor prime minister Julia Gillard in 2011 to advance the human rights of women and girls, “particularly in the Indo-Pacific region”. Stephanie Copus-Campbell has spent more than $335,000 of taxpayer funds on airfares and hotels. Picture: Sean Davey. In December 2022, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong appointed Stephanie Copus Campbell AM – an experienced aid worker and former senior executive – to the position. Department of Foreign Affairs documents obtained by the Opposition under freedom of information laws show Ms Copus has flown to 24 countries since her appointment. While some of the countries are located in the Indo-Pacific region, five of the trips – among the most expensive – were to the US. The first US trip was to attend a Commission on the Status of Women session in New York City and a bilateral visit to Washington in March last year at a cost of $23,442, including more than $13,800 in airfares and $6425 for accommodation. The next US visit occurred in June with Ms Copus attending the Australia-US Strategic Dialogue on Gender Equality in Washington at a cost of more than $21,600, including more than $20,000 in flights alone. In September, Ms Copus was again back in the US to attend a “global gathering on countering the gender equality pushback” in New York at a cost of $23,244, including more than $20,000 on flights. Picture: Instagram In March this year, another trip to the US occurred, this time to New York as well as Mexico and Chile for talks at a cost of more than $37,000, including over $28,000 worth of flights. It was back to New York again in June – and also a trip to Mexico – to attend talks including the “global dialogue on technology” at a cost of $21,154. There’s no suggestion Ms Copus’s trips were not within the rules or that any money was spent beyond her professional commitments. Seizing on Ms Copus’ five US trips, Mr Stevens questioned what work Australia’s official ambassador to the US, Kevin Rudd, was doing. “If Anthony Albanese is so confident that our Ambassador to America is doing his job, he must explain why his gender ambassador has been to America fives times in 15 months,” he said. “Labor has spent $335,000 flying someone around the globe to do exactly what the more than 100 ambassadors we already have should be doing. “There is important progress to be made on gender equality, but this role seems to involve a lot of time sitting in airport lounges and on international business class flights, at great cost to the taxpayer. Together, the ambassadors for climate change, First Nations people and gender have spent almost $750,000 of taxpayers’ funds on international travel alone.” A Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said all countries used their international engagement to promote national interests and values. “That’s why an Ambassadorial role promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality has been in place for more than thirteen years – and many of Australia’s closest allies and partners have equivalent ambassadors, for the same reasons,” he said. Legendary Scottish pop star Jimmy Somerville has condemned LGB Alliance for the "unapproved misuse" of one of his songs. The former lead singer and lyricist of Bronski Beat and The Communards posted a clip on social media telling the campaign group, which has been accused of transphobia, not to use 1984 hit "Smalltown Boy" in a forthcoming documentary. Describing the group as "anti-trans", the Glaswegian-born singer said: "It has come to my attention that the LGB Alliance is using Smalltown Boy in a film called Generational Gay. “LGB Alliance is anti-trans. I would never allow anything of mine to be used by such a group. “We will do everything we can as soon as possible to have Smalltown Boy removed from this film. How dare you? How f*****g dare you?” Released in May 1984, "Smalltown Boy" reached number three in the UK chart and became the biggest hit for Bronski Beat, the synth-pop group formed of Somerville, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek. The track became and remains a queer anthem, and in 2022 was named one of the greatest dance songs of all time by Rolling Stone. Critics of LGB Alliance say the group are against the rights of trans people. The group are advocates of sex-based rights and oppose proposed legislation in the Scottish Parliament to change the process of legal recognition of gender to be "based only on self-identification rather than biological sex".
A top US official sought to quell growing concern Sunday over reported drone sightings in the country's northeast, reiterating there was no known security threat as authorities monitor the situation. President Joe Biden's administration has faced mounting criticism for not clearly identifying origins of the objects seen hovering over parts of New York and New Jersey. The criticism has come even from Biden's own party, with top Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer calling Sunday for action to make it easier for federal, state and local authorities to work together to detect and if need be "bring down" any drone seen to pose a threat. Video footage of mysterious airborne phenomena recently has clogged social media, with spottings also reported in Maryland and Virginia. "Some of those drone sightings are, in fact, drones. Some are manned aircraft that are commonly mistaken for drones," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" program. "But there's no question that drones are being sighted," he said, noting there are more than one million registered across the United States. "I want to assure the American public that we are on it," he said. "If we identify any foreign involvement or criminal activity, we will communicate with the American public accordingly. Right now, we are not aware of any." Even as Mayorkas sought to reassure the public, Boston police announced Sunday that two Massachusetts men had been arrested the previous night for allegedly conducting a "hazardous drone operation" near the city's Logan International Airport. State police were conducting a search for a third suspect, who authorities said fled the scene. Schumer, in a letter to Mayorkas Sunday, urged the Department of Homeland Security to immediately deploy special drone-detection technology across New York and New Jersey, since traditional radar struggles to detect such small objects. He also called for passage of legislation to explicitly authorize state and local law enforcement to work with federal agencies to detect and "bring down drones that threaten critical facilities or mass gatherings." Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, meanwhile expressed frustration at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) over its communications around the issue. "The answer 'we don't know' is not a good enough answer," he told "Fox News Sunday." "When people are anxious... people will fill a vacuum with, you know, their fears and anxieties and conspiracy theories," he said, calling for the FAA to hold public briefings. White House national security spokesman John Kirby had previously said the aircraft could be lawfully operated planes or helicopters mistaken for drones. "While there is no known malicious activity occurring, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight a gap in authorities," he said Thursday, calling for Congress to pass new legislation to "extend and expand existing counter-drone authorities." New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Sunday that authorities had agreed to send a drone detection system to her state. "I am grateful for the support, but we need more. Congress must pass a law that will give us the power to deal directly with the drones," she said on X. On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump urged federal authorities to clearly identify the drones' origins. "Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!" he posted on social media. As the price of drones has fallen -- small quadcopter models with Wi-Fi camera capability can be purchased for as little as $40 -- their numbers and popularity have soared, making their presence in American skies a greater concern. acb/des/bbk/mlm
