Analysis: After pardoning son, Biden returns home to a credibility problemThe Ludhiana Police has filed six FIRs, including two against a Delhi-based lawyer and four against unidentified individuals, for allegedly uploading ‘morphed and edited’ videos of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal. The videos purportedly distorted Kejriwal’s speeches about the Dalit (Scheduled Caste) community and farmers. The FIRs state that these videos have the potential to disturb peace in Punjab and other states, and have deeply hurt the sentiments of the SC/ST community. The FIRs further state that the alleged videos were intentionally uploaded to tarnish former Delhi CM Kejriwal’s public image. The complaints were lodged by local AAP leaders from the Valmiki community in Ludhiana under sections related to giving provocative statements, forgery, and offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act. One of the FIRs, registered at Salem Tabri police station on the complaint of AAP leader Vijay Danav, highlights that a video of Kejriwal’s speech about the SC/ST community was ‘morphed’. The complaint claims that the video could ‘violate peace among the public and has hurt the sentiments of the community in Punjab and other states.’ Similar FIRs have been registered at Dugri, Sahnewal, Haibowal, Division No 5, and Model Town police stations. Ludhiana police commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal confirmed that the FIRs were filed based on complaints about ‘morphed’ videos of Kejriwal’s speeches, which were shared on social media platforms. “The cases have been registered under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 192 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 336(4) (forgery), 352 (intentional insult with intent to breach peace), and 353(2) (creating enmity between different groups). Additionally, sections under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act have been invoked,” he said. The police investigation is ongoing to identify the culprits,” he added. On April 27, the Shimlapuri police lodged an FIR against a YouTube channel for making false and scandalous statements against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha.

Liberty (8-2, 5-2 Conference USA) has won eight-plus games for the sixth consecutive season to keep alive hopes of a second straight trip to the conference championship game. Quarterback Kaidon Salter also carried 11 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. Three other players had at least two rushes for Liberty, which ended with 63 carries. According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, Apple has no ‘meaningful’ plans to refresh AirPods Max after the introduction of the USB-C model earlier this year. If you were waiting for a bigger refresh with a newer chip, improved noise cancellation, or anything else – you’re out of luck. Apple introduced AirPods Max in December 2020 at the high price of $549, and left them unchanged for nearly four years. We later got a USB-C version in September 2024, with some refreshed colors, but that was it. No upgrade to the H2 chip, no adaptive audio, or anything substantial. According to Gurman, AirPods Max at their $549 price tag aren’t quite worth Apple’s time: The headphones aren’t a hot enough seller to justify pouring money into development, but they’re also not a big enough flop to kill them outright. If you’ve ever been to an upscale gym in Los Angeles or New York, you can see these $550 headphones have a market — even with the high price and outdated technology. Gurman believes that Apple will keep AirPods Max around in their current form for the “foreseeable future”, so it might be a couple years before we see a truly updated model. Obviously, it would make sense for Apple to cut the price of AirPods Max if they wanted it to sell better, but Apple doesn’t have much of an incentive to do so. Hopefully, AirPods Max don’t wither away on Apple’s website for the next four years like the first pair did, but it’s sounding like that’ll be the case. What do you think of AirPods Max in their current form? Let us know in the comments. Follow Michael: X/Twitter , Bluesky , InstagramJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ) Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft says he's putting life in public office on hold. Ashcroft is ending his second term after losing the Republican primary for governor last summer. A spokesman for his office confirmed that Ashcroft told the Missouri Independent this week that he has no plans to seek another public office. Ashcroft, the son of former Missouri governor and U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft, was elected to the secretary of state post in 2016 and won re-election in 2020. “I don’t have any intention to run for office again,” Ashcroft told The Independent. Ashcroft, who was in southwest Missouri with family Tuesday, was not available for an interview on Christmas Eve. His wife, Katie Ashcroft, will work as chief of staff for the incoming lieutenant governor, Dave Wasinger.

Technology stocks led a broad rally on Wall Street Tuesday during a holiday-shortened trading session ahead of Christmas. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% for its third-straight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.9%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 1.3%. While Big Tech companies, including Apple, Amazon and chip company Broadcom helped push the market higher, the gains were widespread. Advancers outnumbered decliners by more than 3-to-1 on the New York Stock Exchange. Broadcom rose 3.2%, Apple gained 1.1% and Amazon closed 1.8% higher. Super Micro Computer climbed 6%. Tesla jumped 7.4% for the biggest gains among S&P 500 stocks. American Airlines shook off an early loss and ended with a 0.6% gain after the airline briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical issue. Elsewhere in the market, U.S. Steel rose 1.9% a day after an influential government panel failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of the nearly $15 billion proposed sale to Nippon Steel of Japan. NeueHealth surged 74.9% after the health care company agreed to be taken private in a deal valued at roughly $1.3 billion. All told, the S&P 500 rose 65.97 points to 6,040.04. The Dow added 390.08 points to 43,297.03, and the Nasdaq rose 266.24 points to 20,031.13. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was little changed at 4.59%. European markets closed mostly higher. Markets in Asia mostly gained ground. Tuesday’s U.S. market rally comes as the stock market enters what’s historically been a very cheerful season. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. The so-called “Santa rally” also correlates closely with positive returns in January and the upcoming year. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the stock market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up 26.6% so far this year and remains within roughly 1% of the all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. U.S. markets will be closed Wednesday for Christmas. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to this week, including a weekly update on unemployment benefits on Thursday.Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), which houses the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC), will launch the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for volcano-induced tsunamis and dissemination of tsunami warnings to the maritime sector on December 26. The launch is in commemoration of the 20 th anniversary of the massive tsunami of December 26, 2004, which devastated 14 countries across the Indian Ocean Region, claiming over 2.3 lakh lives and impacting millions more. A conclave will also be organised at the institute, which works under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), the same day. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh, MoES Secretary M. Ravichandran, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) executive secretary Vidar Helgesen and others will participate in the event, said INCOIS director T.M. Balakrishnan Nair on Friday (December 21). He said the tsunami tragedy had served as a wake-up call for the global community to enhance disaster preparedness and response. While the Indian Ocean Region continues to face significant tsunami risks, it is far better prepared today. This was achieved with the support of international collaboration through IOC-UNESCO Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System. The director said the country, with its extensive coastline and vulnerable population, has taken many steps to enhance disaster preparedness with ITEWC-INCOIS becoming the nodal agency for real-time monitoring and warning services. It is also one of the Tsunami Service Providers for the Indian Ocean Region. India is also the first country in the Indian Ocean Region to have tsunami-ready communities, with Venkatraipur and Noliasahi in Odisha achieving the recognition in 2020 and 24 more villages getting it later, thanks to the efforts of the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority, National Disaster Management Authority, INCOIS and IOC-UNESCO. Further efforts are on to expand the programme nationwide, he said. IOC-UNESCO teams will visit the institute this weekend to check how the tsunamis are detected, monitored and alerts issued. They will also visit the 26 tsunami-ready villages in Odisha, where they will observe mock drills and so on, he added. Culpeper Sheriff Tim Chilton said in a recent phone call his agency would conduct a speed study to determine if the cameras are warranted in any of the various school zones around the town and county. He said, “We get tons of violations,” from school bus stop-arm cameras the school board approved in recent years to catch vehicles illegally passing stopped school buses. Those shown on camera passing the stop arm receive a court date and potential fine. The City of Fredericksburg and Fredericksburg Police Department on Nov. 1 announced enforcement cameras would be installed later this year, to be “strategically located” in school zones at Hugh Mercer Elementary and James Monroe High, according to a release. The cameras will help create a safer environment for children, the release stated. People are also reading... Fredericksburg is partnering with Altumint, a leader in automated traffic enforcement services, to provide and manage the speed cameras. According to Sheriff Chilton, the locality pays nothing for the cameras, which are supported by court fines. In Fredericksburg, to ensure a smooth transition, a 30-day warning period will be implemented to allow drivers to adjust their behavior. During this time, violators will receive warnings instead of citations, according to the release. “It is crucial to create a safe environment for our students, families, and employees as they commute to and from school,” said Fredericksburg Police Chief Brian Layton, in a statement. “We aim to positively influence driver behavior near our school campuses by implementing this innovative technology.” Fredericksburg Mayor Kerry Devine said in a statement they wish to deter speeding citywide, but it is especially important to provide safe school zones for children. He said City Council supports the speed zone cameras. State law allows photo speed monitoring devices in school zones and the associated $100 fine, according to the Code of Virginia. Sheriff Chilton said he feels the speed study will show a need for cameras in certain school zones around Culpeper. The matter will be brought before the School Board as well for their consideration, he said. “In some of our places, we get a lot of complaints about speeding in the school zones,” Chilton said. “You’ll see the town guys sitting in the school zones and they write up quite a few.” It’s a safety issue. County deputies are standing in the road in the school zones before and after school directing traffic, the sheriff said. They face hazards. “Had one the other day that got hit, a trainee, got knocked down, hit his hand,” Chilton said. “It’s not very often, but it does happen every now and then,” Chilton said of deputies struck by vehicles in school zones. Cameras in speed zones have been around for probably less than 10 years, the sheriff said, noting the message is getting amped up. “That’s the big topic—to get people to slow down when buses are coming in and out and all the kids are coming in and out.” Chilton said standalone camera companies have popped up in the last five years or so to fill the need. With each violation, deputies will look at footage to determine if they are legitimate charges before forwarding to the local traffic court, the sheriff said. OTTAWA — U.S. president-elect Donald Trump and those in his corner continue to muse about annexing Canada, though Canadian officials have largely sidestepped those comments. In a post on the social media platform X, Eric Trump shared a doctored photo of his father purchasing Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal on Amazon, with the phrase "We are so back!!!" Since winning the presidential election in November, Trump has repeatedly referred to Canada as the "51st state." On Trump's Truth Social platform, he's also repeatedly referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the "governor" of Canada. Trump has also threatened 25 per cent tariffs against Canada, which has prompted discussions at both the federal and provincial levels on the best way to deal with the incoming Trump government. Carleton University professor Aaron Ettinger said federal officials have rightly been dismissing the social-media posts and maintained a "focus like a laser beam" on the real and "existential threat" of tariffs. "This strikes me as being profoundly unserious," said Ettinger, who has studied Canada-U.S. relations during the first Trump presidency. "These are taunts; these are churlish provocations that are not mature, and do not reflect just how serious the coming trade war is," he said. Ettinger said Trump is likely continually posting about Canada because it plays well to his supporters, without being seen as a real threat of annexation. "We know his moves. He makes fun of, he belittles, he mocks, because he can," he said. But he said that a vacuum of leadership in Ottawa from embattled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is spurring "the freelancing of some of the provincial leaders" in response to Trump's comments. For example, Ontario Premier Doug Ford weighed in on Trump's postings on Dec. 18, telling media that "we'll never be the 51st state. We're Canada; we're proud to be Canadians. We'll always fight for that." Ettinger said civil society is similarly better to focus on convincing Americans to not impose damaging tariffs on Canada, instead of amping up anti-Trump rhetoric. "Canadians should worry first about what Canada's actual national interests are," he said. "We're not going to out-trash talk Donald Trump, so don't even bother trying and focus instead on the core stuff that really matters." In response to Trump's threats, the Trudeau Liberal government has unveiled a $1.3 billion spending package over six years to address Trump's threats, which concern border security and the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. Canada's ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman has repeatedly characterized Trump's comments as gentle ribbing between two close countries. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said on Dec. 13 that she has quipped to Republican senators that they could join Canada as the eleventh province. Greenland's head of government, Múte Bourup Egede, suggested that Trump's latest calls to purchase the territory from Denmark would be as meaningless as those made in his first term. "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale," he said in a statement. "We must not lose our years-long fight for freedom." Panama President José Raúl Mulino has also rebuffed Trump's musing about taking over the Panama Canal. "Every square metre of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to," he said in a video, to which Trump fired back on his social media site, "We'll see about that!" This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 24, 2024. — With files from The Associated Press Dylan Robertson, The Canadian PressNew York Giants quarterback Drew Lock will have an MRI on his right shoulder after injuring it in Sunday's 34-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Monday. The results of Monday's MRI will help the team decide which quarterback gets the start in Week 17's matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, Daboll said, continuing a season trend of question marks at the position. New York has used four different quarterbacks this season, as longtime starter Daniel Jones was benched and later released on Nov. 22. Lock sat out the Giants' 35-14 loss in Week 15 to the visiting Baltimore Ravens due to heel and left elbow injuries. Tommy DeVito started against the Ravens and sustained a concussion late in the second quarter. Tim Boyle replaced DeVito and completed 12 of 24 passes for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his debut with the team. Boyle had bounced between the practice squad and active roster since New York signed him in November. The Giants (2-13) will try to snap a 10-game losing skid -- the longest in franchise history -- on Sunday when they host the Colts (7-8). Lock, 28, is in his first season with the Giants and is 68-for-129 passing for 624 yards, one TD and four interceptions in six games (three starts). The Denver Broncos selected Lock in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played three seasons for the Broncos (2019-21) before they traded him to the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022. He has passed for 5,907 yards with a 58.7 percent completion rate, 29 TDs and 27 interceptions in 34 career games (26 starts). --Field Level MediaSoccer-Tottenham manager Postecoglou cops flak from angry fans

But a group of Republican lawmakers, led by Sen. Jim Risch (R-Idaho), the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, say that the STA renewal was a mistake. They argue that the era in which U.S.–China science and technology cooperation made sense is “long gone.” “The risks are clear. We already know the PRC has leveraged research cooperation enabled by the STA to support state-led industrial development and advance military objectives that harm U.S. interests.” The STA was signed in 1979, just weeks after the United States established diplomatic relations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-ruled People’s Republic of China (PRC) to counter the Soviet Union’s influence. The agreement was extended in 2018 and given temporary extensions last year and this year. The senators say in their letter that the CCP’s control of its economic and research ecosystems allows it to leverage science and technology ties with the United States and other countries to acquire technology, fill knowledge gaps, and develop critical talent that advances its strategic and economic objectives. “Renewal of the STA provides top cover to universities, businesses, and professional bodies to continue science and technology research cooperation with the PRC. The U.S. government should send the opposite signal,” they wrote. “The PRC has also limited access to U.S.-funded research data, in violation of previous agreements. We should also consider the safety of U.S. researchers, given the PRC’s record of using U.S. citizens as bargaining chips to secure the release of PRC nationals in U.S. custody. The Department of State has provided several briefings to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the STA, and members of Congress of both chambers have introduced legislation to increase congressional oversight of the STA and require guardrails for dual-use research and human rights protections. The letter, co-signed by Sens. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), ends with a call for a response on “this urgent matter.” “STA renewal during the last days of this administration denies the incoming administration a chance to weigh in on this highly controversial agreement. The Biden Administration should reverse course,” it reads.None
