The first expanded playoff bracket unveiled Sunday left a presumably deserving Alabama team on the sideline in favor of an SMU squad that finished with a better record after playing a schedule that was not as difficult. It ranked undefeated Oregon first but set up a possible rematch against Ohio State, the team that came closest to beating the Ducks this year. It treated underdog Boise State like a favorite and banged-up Georgia like a world beater at No. 2. It gave Ohio State home-field advantage against Tennessee for reasons it would take a supercomputer to figure out. It gave the sport the multiweek tournament it has longed for, but also ensured there will be plenty to grouse about between now and when the trophy is handed out on Jan. 20 after what will easily be the longest college football season in history. All of it, thankfully, will be sorted out on the field starting with first-round games on campuses Dec. 20 and 21, then over three succeeding rounds that will wind their way through traditional bowl sites. Maybe Oregon coach Dan Lanning, whose undefeated Ducks are the favorite to win it all, put it best when he offered: "Winning a national championship is not supposed to be easy.” Neither, it turns out, is figuring out who should play for it. The Big Ten will lead the way with four teams in the tournament, followed by the SEC with three and the ACC with two. The lasting memory from the inaugural bracket will involve the decision that handed the ACC that second bid. Alabama of the SEC didn't play Saturday. SMU of the ACC did. The Mustangs fell behind by three touchdowns to Clemson before coming back to tie. But they ultimately lost 34-31 on a 56-yard field goal as time expired. “We were on pins and needles,” SMU coach Rhett Lashley said. “Until we saw the name ‘SMU’ up there, we were hanging on the edge. We're really, really happy and thankful to the committee for rewarding our guys for their total body of work." The Mustangs only had two losses, compared to three for the Crimson Tide. Even though SMU's schedule wasn't nearly as tough, the committee was impressed by the way the Mustangs came back against Clemson. “We just felt, in this particular case, SMU had the nod above Alabama,” said Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, the chairman of the selection committee. “But it’s no disrespect to Alabama’s strength of schedule. We looked at the entire body of work for both teams.” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne was gracious, up to a point. “Disappointed with the outcome and felt we were one of the 12 best teams in the country,” he said on social media. He acknowledged — despite all of Alabama’s losses coming against conference opponents this season — that the Tide’s push to schedule more games against teams from other major conferences in order to improve its strength of schedule did not pay off this time. “That is not good for college football," Byrne said. Georgia, the SEC champion, was seeded second; Boise State, the Mountain West champion, earned the third seed; and Big 12 titlist Arizona State got the fourth seed and the fourth and final first-round bye. All will play in quarterfinals at bowl games on Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Clemson stole a bid and the 12th seed with its crazy win over SMU, the result that ultimately cost Alabama a spot in the field. The Tigers moved to No. 16 in the rankings, but got in as the fifth-best conference winner. The conference commissioners' idea to give conference champions preferable treatment in this first iteration of the 12-team playoff could be up for reconsideration after this season. The committee actually ranked Boise State, the Mountain West Champion, at No. 9 and Big 12 champion Arizona State at No. 12, but both get to skip the first round. Another CFP guideline: There’s no reseeding of teams after each round, which means no break for Oregon. The top-seeded Ducks will face the winner of Tennessee-Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Staying below, keeps the sellers in control Move above and their should be more upside probing with the 38.2% of the November range at 1.05628 as the next target GBPUSD: The GBPUSD traded higher form most of the day after better data today. The price extended above a swing area up to 1.2676 but stalled ahead of the 100 hour MA near 1.2700. That is also near the 38.2% of the move down from the November high. The 1.2700 level will be the key barometer in the new trading day. USDJPY: The USDJPY traded to the highest level since November 26 on the better PMI data, but could not sustain upside momentum. The price rotated lower off the highs but will need to go below 153.88 and then the 61.8% at 153.647 to give the sellers more confifence. However, a move below the swing area at 153.28 to 153.46 to really disappoint the buyers and put the sellers more in control. AUDUSD: The AUDUSD tested the falling 100-hour MA on the topside but could not sustain upside momentum. That MA comes in at 0.6373 and will need to be broken to increase the bullish bias. A move above that will still have the 200 hour MA at 0.6398 to get to and thrrough to give the buyers more control and confidence. Absent that, and the sellers are still in play. NZDUSD: The NZDUSD is also testing its falling 100-hour MA on the topside. That MA on the NZDUSD comes in at 0.57794. Get and stay above is needed to target the swig level at 0.5797 and then the 200-hour MA at 0.58145. Fail on getting above those levels keeps the sellers in firm control.

That means in their last 49 games, they lost 35 games, 23 of them in consecutive fashion. The madness needs to stop! The Chicago Bears struggling offensive line suffered another blow last week. Left tackle Braxton Jones , arguably the Bears’ best offensive lineman, suffered a gruesome injury and is now out for the rest of the season. Additionally, left guard Teven Jenkins suffered a calf injury. It was his fifth body part injured this season. Injuries have decimated the offensive line the past few seasons. It was a head-scratcher that Poles did not do more to solidify the unit. That is all in the past, though. Hopefully, he learned from his mistake and he and the Chicago Bears front office make the offensive line a priority. The thing to look for now, however, is who do the Chicago Bears assemble on the left side of the line for the final two games of the season. With Jones out now, Kiran Amegadjie looks to get a second opportunity to show what he can do. He had his first start in Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings. That performance was one to forget. Amegadjie looked lost as Vikings pass rushers made him look silly. His play was so bad that the Bears had him inactive for Week 16. He was drafted to be the future starter at left tackle so he needs to start showing something. Of course, as bad of a performance as it was, the Bears could decide to go with Larry Borom . However, he has also struggled this season and is not in consideration as a starter in the future. With the unit about to be overhauled, Amegadjie wants to ensure he is still a part of the future. The Bears should give him another shot. Jenkins did not practice on Monday or Tuesday so his status for Thursday is up in the air. If he is a no-go, Jake Curhan will step in again. He did not do too bad of a job when he filled in for Jenkins last week. Can Williams continue to survive and play well? Despite the horrific play of the offensive line and the rushing attack, Caleb Williams has not had a bad season. Because of the losses piling up, many feel that he hasn’t lived up to the hype (despite win/loss record not being a quarterback stat). With the high hopes dashed, they put a lot of blame on Williams. However, Williams has played well despite in spite of having to run for his life every game. In addition to the 60 sacks, he has been knocked down 36 times and hurried 46 times. That makes it difficult for him to find open receivers. Williams has been able to find them, however. He has 3,271 passing yards and 19 touchdowns. Additionally, he has only 5 interceptions. In fact, he holds the rookie record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception at 326 and counting. He is targeting the NFL record of 402 set by Aaron Rodgers . His passing yards rank sixth all-time in Chicago Bears history. If he averages 283.5 passing yards in the final two games he will the the all-time passing leader in a season. Remember, he is a rookie. Williams needs to finish the season strong. He still has some developing to do so, while many feel the Chicago Bears should sit him, that would be the worst thing to do. He needs as many snaps as he can get. He can use the season as a springboard to next season. He could build on the positives and negatives to be even better in 2025. Government secrecy protects sources and methods. And liars and errors. And obsolete military procurement contracts that are too politically important to challenge or change. That may be the story behind government secrecy about UFOs, more recently called Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAPs. On Nov. 13, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-South Carolina, chaired a hearing by two House Oversight subcommittees on UAPs, seeking to determine whether information about them has been withheld from Congress and the American people. One of the witnesses was journalist Michael Shellenberger. He recently revealed in a report for his online news site Public that the U.S. government has an “Unacknowledged Special Access Program” about UAPs. It’s called “Immaculate Constellation,” and it has collected high-resolution images, sensor data and first-hand reports about UAPs for decades without any authorization from Congress, without even informing Congress of the existence of the program. Shellenberger obtained an 11-page report on Immaculate Constellation from a whistleblower and turned it over to Mace and the House Oversight subcommittees. Mace made the report available to the public on her congressional website. “This document is the result of a multi-year, internal investigation into the subjects of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), Technologies of Unknown Origin (TUO), and Non-Human Intelligence (NHI),” the report begins. It’s wild reading. According to the report, the U.S. government possesses full-motion video and forward-looking infrared imagery of a formation of a dozen “metallic orbs,” 3-6 meters in diameter, “skimming the ocean surface at high speed before dispersing in multiple directions.” Their maneuvering was “rapid and agile” and in the infrared footage they were “white-hot against the black-cold ocean.” Then there was a report of a “small-medium oval UAP” flying fast and low over a “sensitive coastal facility.” And there was another report of a “large equilateral-triangle UAP” that was “hovering and slowly rotating” directly over a grouping of ships that were engaged in intelligence collection in the Pacific Ocean. A report in the government’s files described a saucer-shaped UAP that ducked in and out of the clouds as if it “had become aware that it was under observation.” Another report told of a “boomerang UAP” that was observed “rapidly decelerating to a stationary hover, followed by the sudden emission of a sphere of light from the junction of the two ‘wings’ which expands to partially engulf the craft in a rotating sphere of light, at which point the available footage ends.” In 2021, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence reviewed reports of UAPs and concluded that some of the flying objects appeared to have technological capabilities that the U.S. and its adversaries couldn’t match. Congress has been pressing the executive branch for more information. In March, the Department of Defense released a report stating that in decades of investigations, no evidence had been found that these UAPs were extraterrestrial spacecraft piloted by non-human intelligence from another planet. But what are they and why are they here? Former Department of Defense official Luis Elizondo testified at the November hearing that the government has a secret program to retrieve the wreckage of crashed UAPs and reverse engineer them. “Advanced technologies not made by our government, or any other government, are monitoring sensitive military installations around the globe,” Elizondo testified. Last December, swarms of mystery drones buzzed Langley Air Force Base for 17 days, raising significant concerns. A Langley spokesman told the publication The War Zone that the “uncrewed aerial systems” didn’t “exhibit hostile intent, but anything flying in our restricted airspace can pose a threat to flight safety.” U.S. F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets are based at Langley, where they are part of the nation’s defense forces protecting Washington, D.C. In March, the Senate Armed Services Committee heard testimony from U.S. Air Force General Gregory Guillot, who had recently become the head of U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, also known as NORTHCOM and NORAD. Guillot told the committee that drone incursions over the U.S. southern border numbered “in the thousands,” describing it as “alarming.” Since at least 2017, military experts have been warning of the danger presented by swarms of unmanned drones armed with surveillance equipment or weapons. “Imagine a world where somebody flies a couple hundred of those and flies one down the intake of my F-22s with just a small weapon on it,” General James Holmes said in a speech to the Air Force Association. The War Zone noted that the greater danger might be to fighter jets sitting “idle and vulnerable on the flight line.” One swarm of armed drones could destroy “a whole squadron of tightly packed fighters” without any chance to fight back. Non-hypothetical drone warfare is happening right now in the Russia-Ukraine war, and separately, a Pentagon spokesman acknowledged a series of drone incursions over U.S. air bases in England over the last 10 days. That raises a question: What has the Pentagon been doing all this time while the threat of inexpensive weaponized drones was developing? Is it possible that U.S. presidents, defense contractors, intelligence agencies and Pentagon officials intentionally hid from Congress and the public, for decades, all evidence that military drones were gradually becoming a reality, in order to protect existing defense procurement contracts that otherwise might have been questioned or rejected? To carry out a plan like that, multiple U.S. administrations would have to impose strict secrecy on every report of an unidentified flying object, then refuse to declassify the reports, or release them only with heavy redactions. In addition, the people making the reports would have to be ridiculed and marginalized to the point where they question their own sanity, making others afraid to report what they themselves have seen.
