(AP) — If Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi has any definite ideas about who'll play quarterback for New Orleans against Washington on Sunday, he's not ready to share that information. Rizzi maintained on Wednesday that there's still a chance that Derek Carr could clear the concussion protocol and function well enough with his injured, non-throwing left hand to return against the Commanders. Meanwhile, reserve QBs Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler split first-team snaps during Wednesday's practice, which Carr missed, Rizzi said. “We're not going to name a starter right now,” said Rizzi, who also made a point of noting that Carr would not be placed on the club's injured reserve list and would not need surgery. “We're going to see how that progression plays out, first with Derek and then obviously with Jake and Spencer.” Carr, whose latest injury occurred when he tried to dive for a first down during Sunday's 14-11 victory over the New York Giants , has already missed three starts this season because of a separate, oblique injury. New Orleans lost all three of those games, with Rattler, a rookie, starting and Haener, a second-year pro, serving as the backup. In his three starts, Rattler completed 59 of 99 passes (59.6%) for 571 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Haener has gotten sporadic work this season in relief of both Carr and Rattler, completing 14 of 29 passes (48.3%) for 177 yards and one TD without an interception. Rizzi said he finds the 6-foot-1 Haener and 6-foot Rattler “very similar in a lot of ways," adding that whichever of those two might play “doesn't change a whole bunch" in terms of game-planning. “They're both similar-size guys. Their athletic ability is very similar,” Rizzi said. “They're similar-style quarterbacks. We're not dealing with opposites on the spectrum.” The Saints also signed another QB this week — Ben DiNucci — to help take scout team snaps at practice, now that Rattler and Haener are not as available to do that while competing to possibly start if Carr is indeed unable to play. The Saints (5-8) have won three of four games since Rizzi took over following the firing of coach Dennis Allen. That allowed New Orleans to remain alive in the NFC South Division, currently led by Tampa Bay (7-6). Rizzi said Carr has not had any setbacks this week in terms of progressing through the NFL's concussion protocol. “By the end of the week, if's he's not able to get any reps in any form or fashion, then obviously we'll go with one of the other guys,” Rizzi said. NOTES: RB Alvin Kamara did not practice on Wednesday because of an illness. ... WR Chris Olave, who is out indefinitely because of concussions this season, has returned to meetings at Saints headquarters. He as not, however, made plans to return to practice yet because he still plans to meet first with neurological specialists to try to assess the risks of returning to action during what's left of this season. While that didn't mean he would be ready for Game 1 of the regular season, it's been rather unexpected that he's missed the first 21 games so far. When Middleton addressed the media for the first time this season on Oct. 31, he said, "I feel good, just not good enough to play." He said there had been no setbacks in his recovery up to that point, suggesting that perhaps he was being extremely cautious in approaching his return to the game. And given that Middleton has dealt with his fair share of injuries over the years, that makes sense. But now, after an extended time of preparation to return, it appears Middleton is finally ready to suit up for the Bucks again, and the timing couldn't be better. Milwaukee started the season rough, going just 2-8 in their first 10 games. But have since dug themselves out of that hole to go 9-2 over their next 11 games and have moved up in the latest CBS Sports' NBA Power Rankings . They're now 11-10 on the season, which in what has been an incredibly weak Eastern Conference is good enough for fifth right now. Milwaukee is trending in the right direction behind the tandem of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, who have seemed to figure things out in Year 2 of their partnership. Lillard is back to his efficient ways after a down season, shooting 45.1% from the field and 37.7% from deep while averaging 26 points and 7.5 assists. Antetokounmpo, though, is the central reason the Bucks have swung their early-season troubles in the opposite direction. Without Middleton, Giannis is putting up a career-high 32.6 points, which currently leads the league in scoring. On a nightly basis, he's willing the Bucks to victories, and without his efforts, Milwaukee would be in a far worse position than it is now. The addition of Middleton should aid in taking some of the offensive load off Antetokounmpo's shoulders. Middleton gives the Bucks another reliable scorer next to Giannis and Lillard, someone who can play with or without the ball in his hands and a guy who will only boost Milwaukee's fourth-rank 3-point attack this season. Middleton's struggled to stay healthy in the last two years, but Milwaukee is hoping that with this extended absence, he just took to get prepared to return both physically and mentally, it will be the thing he needs to return to his All-Star ways. The Seminoles (6-1) won their third consecutive game and went 2-0 in the event as they pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 36 points. It's Florida State's best start since the 2019-20 season when it went 7-1. UMass (1-5) dropped its fifth in a row following a season-opening win over New Hampshire despite a strong game on Sunday from Jaylen Curry, who scored 17 points. Curry, with six free throws, helped propel the Minutemen on a 10-0 run over a four-plus minute span in the first half to take a 24-23 lead with 4:22 left. FSU closed the half on a 13-3 run to lead 37-27 at halftime. A 15-4 surge to open the second half helped the Seminoles break the game open. Florida State's defense frustrated UMass shooters throughout the contest, especially on the perimeter, limiting the Minutemen to 3-for-24 shooting (12.5 percent) from 3-point range and 18-for-58 (31 percent) overall. The Seminoles finished with 22 points off 17 UMass turnovers. On the flipside, Florida State had one of its best shooting games of the season. The Seminoles moved the ball well throughout the game and finished with 25 assists while only turning the ball over 10 times. The Seminoles shot 33 for 58 (57 percent) from the field and made 9 of 18 three-pointers to put together a season-high scoring output. Once again, Florida State shined thanks to its depth as 10 players scored and four scored in double figures. The Seminoles were able to have 16 players participate in the game as well. Jamir Watkins finished with 14 points while Jerry Deng and Justin Thomas each had 10 points. For UMass, Daniel Rivera finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Nate Guerengomba had 10 points. Congressman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), who campaigned for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), chairs the Committee on House Administration. He shared the GOP’s plans for the American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act and the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in comments to The Associated Press . “As we look to the new year with unified Republican government, we have a real opportunity to move these pieces of legislation not only out of committee, but across the House floor and into law,” he said. “We need to improve Americans’ confidence in elections.” The AP pointed out that “Republicans are likely to face opposition from Democrats and have little wiggle room with their narrow majorities in both the House and Senate.
